cury-pol)uted soil (1g), which contained 7.5nntol of Hg, approximate}y 4.1 nmol of mercury was volatilized, indicating that 54% of the total mercury in the soi} was vo]ati}ized. The amount of mercury yolatilized from the soil was dependent en the concentration of Fe2+ added to the medium. When elemental sulfur, sodium tetrathionate, and pyrite were used as an electron donor for the mercury reduction, 16, 2.4 and O.84%, respectively, of the total mercury added to the solution were volatilized. The optimum pH and temperature for mercury velatilization were 2.5 and 300C. Approximately 92% of the total mercury in a salt solution (pH 2.5) with resting cells of SUG 2-2 (O.Ol mg of protein), ferrous

Volatilization of mercury under acidic conditions from mercury-polluted soil by a mercury-resistant Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans SUG 2-2.

Volatilization of mercury under acidic conditions from soil polluted with mercuric chloride (1.5 mg Hg/kg soil) was studied with resting cells of a mercury-resistant strain, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans SUG 2-2. When resting cells of SUG 2-2 (0.01 mg of protein) were incubated for 10 d at 30 degrees C in 20 ml of 1.6 mM sulfuric acid (pH 2.5) with ferrous sulfate (3%) and mercury-polluted soi...

Ferrous iron-dependent volatilization of mercury by the plasma membrane of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans.

Of 100 strains of iron-oxidizing bacteria isolated, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans SUG 2-2 was the most resistant to mercury toxicity and could grow in an Fe(2+) medium (pH 2.5) supplemented with 6 microM Hg(2+). In contrast, T. ferrooxidans AP19-3, a mercury-sensitive T. ferrooxidans strain, could not grow with 0.7 microM Hg(2+). When incubated for 3 h in a salt solution (pH 2.5) with 0.7 microM Hg...

Volatilization of metal mercury from Organomercurials by highly mercury-resistant Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans MON-1.

The iron-oxidizing bacterium Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans MON-1 is highly resistant not only to mercuric chloride (HgCl(2)) but also to organomercurials such as methylmercury chloride (MMC). We have found that cytochrome c oxidase, purified from strain MON-1, reduces Hg(2+) to volatilizable metal mercury (Hg(0)) with reduced mammalian cytochrome c or Fe(2+) as an electron donor. In this study...

Volatilization of mercuric chloride by mercury-resistant plasmid-bearing strains of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Several bacterial strains carrying genes determining mercury resistance on naturally occurring plasmids will convert 10(-5)m Hg(2+) (chloride) to a form of mercury which is volatile and soluble in organic solvents. The volatilization activity is induced by exposure to HgCl(2).

The effects of heavy metal mercury on some physiological responsses in Nicotiana tabacum

One of the major abiotic stresses that negatively affects plants is the presence of heavy metals. Soil pollution with heavy metals, resulting from the industrial development and use of fertilizers containing heavy metals, has become a major environmental concern in human societies. Mercury is a toxic heavy metal that causes pollution in agricultural lands. Accumulation of Hg by plants may disru...
